Samaria Gorge (about 1.5 hours from Rethymno)

One of the most famous gorges in Crete, the Samaria Gorge offers a spectacular hiking route that cuts through the White Mountains (Lefka Ori). The 16 km-long gorge takes you through lush forests, alongside clear streams, and ends at the Libyan Sea. It’s a bit of a trek, but the views and the natural beauty are well worth it.

Lake Kournas

Lake Kournas is the only freshwater lake in Crete, located about 30 minutes from Rethymno. Surrounded by mountains, it’s a peaceful and scenic spot where you can go for a boat ride or simply relax by the water’s edge. The area also offers lovely walking paths and a chance to explore the local wildlife.

Margarites Village & Surroundings

Located just a short drive from Rethymno, Margarites is a charming traditional village with narrow streets and stone houses. The surrounding area offers beautiful walks, olive groves, and views of the Cretan countryside. It’s an excellent spot for hiking or exploring nearby caves and ancient ruins.

Arkadi Monastery & Surroundings

The historic Arkadi Monastery, located about 23 km southeast of Rethymno, is not only an important cultural site but also set in a scenic natural environment. The surrounding area is filled with olive trees and offers peaceful, quiet surroundings perfect for nature lovers.

The Caves of Melidoni

About 25 km from Rethymno, you’ll find the Cave of Melidoni, an ancient site with an interesting history. The cave, surrounded by nature, is also home to impressive stalactites and stalagmites. The surrounding area offers great opportunities for hiking.

Psiloritis (Mount Ida)

If you enjoy mountain hiking, Psiloritis (or Mount Ida), the highest peak on Crete, is a must-see. You can hike to the summit, where you’ll get panoramic views of the island, or explore the various trails that wind through its beautiful natural landscape, including caves and springs.

Kourtaliotiko Gorge

This gorge is about 40 minutes south of Rethymno and is a great place for hiking and nature walks. It’s famous for its impressive cliffs and waterfalls. The gorge is home to a variety of flora and fauna, making it a perfect spot for nature enthusiasts and photographers.
